Magis FC vows more football tourneys in Oro

CAGAYAN de Oro’s Magis Football Club (FC) is back on top form and has vowed to organize more tournaments for the local football community.

Magis president Edwin Bernas Saturday, July 15, promised this when he welcomed the athletes, parents, sponsors and officials during the opening of the Carmen Fiesta Football Festival.

“Magis FC is back to serve the CdO (Cagayan de Oro) football community after we mourned the death of our then president Romee Subere. We also have lined-up another tournament in September in his honor,” he said.

Subere, an active member of the local FA board, died of a heart failure on February 16 last year. He was an active coach and football organizer and was also a member of the Xavier University Football Varsity during his college years.

Bernas, a member of the 2006 Xavier University Football Varsity was elected to replace Subere during their annual assembly December last year. He has worked with the new members of the Magis FC board and now local FA chairman of the technical committee Don Deriquito to make the club more active in the service of the local football community.

One of his projects is the organization of the Milo Summer Football Clinic and the establishment of the Magis FC football academy now being held at the Westridge Sports Park every Saturdays and Sundays.

The Carmen Fiesta Football Festival is his first major tournament and judging by the number of teams which showed up Saturday and the more teams expected Sunday, success is indeed assured in this tournament.

Magis FC was founded in 2003 and was officially registered with the SEC only last year.

Bernas led the ceremonial kick off with Carmen Kagawad Jerry Sabanal and Vice Mayor Kikang Uy representative Edison Suizo.

Some 108 teams in the 8 Under (2009), 10 Under (2007), 12 Under (2005) 14Under (2003), 18 Under Girls (1999), 18 Under Boys (1999), men’s open and women’s open divisions have signed up for the tournament.

The Men’s Open and the Women’s Open categories will compete today.

Sponsors of the Carmen Fiesta Football Festival are Carmen Barangay Council, Tito Pigs, Magis FC, Asia Pacific Technical Skills Development Center Inc., Smart, Carmel Lane, Foto Kyub, Kaiguicoi Sweets, And A, Magnolia, J@J Xentro, Enterprises, and Trading Post.
