Council commends Parantac’s golden performance

AFTER his victory in the recent 28th Southeast Asian Games held in Singapore, Daniel Parantac received commendation from the Baguio City Council during its regular session last Monday.

The council-approved resolution penned by Councilor Leandro Yangot, cited Parantac's gold medal finish in the Men's Wushu Taijiquan category during the biennial meet scoring 9.71 points.

It will be Parantac's back-to-back gold medal in the SEAG after edging Jack Chang Lo from Malaysia who got silver with 9.69 points Julius Kurniawan from Indonesia settled for bronze with 9.68 points.

Parantac's gold came after he settled for a silver medal in the men's duel event weapons with John Keithley Chan, and Norlence Ardee Catolico.

It was the Philippines' third gold medal in the biennial meet after triathletes Claire Adorna and Nikko Huelgas took golds in their respective events.

The Bontoc native led the Philippine wushu taolu team. Joining him are fellow veterans and other Cordillera wushu athletes including John Keithly, his duilian team mate, the female duilian tandem of Natasha Laxamana and Kariza Kris Chan, the returning Thornton Lou Sayan and rookies Spencer Bahod and former world junior champion Ken Alieson Omengan.

The Philippines finished sixth behind Thailand and Singapore with 29 gold medals equaling their output during the 2013 SEAG held in Myanmar.

Singapore put its final stamp on the Southeast Asian Games with an eclectic closing ceremony involving a parade of oversized postage stamps to commemorate the island's history.

The host wrapped up the competition program on a high beating Indonesia 15-10 for the men's water polo gold medal to extend its streak to 26 titles since the sport was introduced at the SEA Games.

Vietnam and Malaysia each won 186 medals, and Indonesia 182, but Vietnam placed third with 73 gold medals, followed by Malaysia (62), Indonesia (47), Philippines, Myanmar (12) and Cambodia (1). Laos, Brunei and East Timor didn't get atop the podium. (Jair Ampaguey, Trinity College Intern)
