Gathering of elite choreographers

BACOLOD City will play host to the 2nd Choreographers Festival Internationale 2017, a biennial gathering of elite choreographers involved in creating dances within the country and throughout the world, on July 28 to 30 at the SMX Convention Center in Bacolod City.

The festival is under the umbrella of Dance Pull Project’s C-MAP Course (Composition and Movement Analysis Program) and is the brainchild of Dwight Rodrigazo.

In an interview with Piaya's “A Listed TV,” the renowned artist presented his plans for the province to become a seat of dance excellence just like many parts of Asia, where arts and culture activities are prevalent. Dance Pull Project is a Bacolod City-based non-profit that teaches, produces and presents dance to nurture choreography and popularize the art of making dances in the Philippines.

“The C-MAP International Choreographers Festival aims to build a market for dance of different genres and to uplift Filipino choreographers to the wider world,” Rodrigazo said. “It creates excellent opportunities to share meaningful experiences together through the art of making dances through knowledge, intuition and creativity.”

The festival, described as the most awaited dance spectacle in the Philippines, will see a total of 119 delegates, including 57 dancers from international dance schools in the United States, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines who will present in the international category.

There will also be 32 participants in the C-MAP Choreographers’ Category that will feature choreographers from Metro Manila, General Santos, Davao, Bohol, Capiz, Dumaguete and Iloilo, as well as 30 delegates from different national ballet schools.

Rodrigazo said the festival will showcase all the final works of certified C-MAP choreographers who completed all levels of the C-MAP Program. The line-up features various styles from both established and emerging dance companies in classical ballet, contemporary, hip-hop and other genres. Special recognition will also be given to awardees for dance and choreography mentorship.

The festival is open to the public, with tickets available at the SMX Convention Center’s ticket booths located between Krispy Kreme and Breadtalk of SM City Atrium.

Rodrigazo said the festival will have three galas with matinees. The first and second galas are sets from invited international guest choreographers and dance companies while the final gala is a set of all the final works of the Certified C-MAP Choreographers; recognition of national awardees; a number of special events, media launching hosted by the City of Bacolod, pre-performances, that are free and open to the public, as well as TV appearances.

The event is presented by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Cultural Center of the Philippines and is supported by the House of Representatives.
