DOJ to reconstitute prosecution panels on Maute cases

THE Department of Justice (DOJ) is set to reconstitute the panels of prosecutors following the Supreme Court's (SC) order to transfer the trial venue of the criminal cases against the Maute group members to the Taguig City Regional Trial Court (RTC).

In a chance interview Wednesday, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II said he will form at least two panels of prosecutors with five members each to handle the rebellion cases filed against members of the Islamic State-inspired group related to the ongoing conflict in Marawi City.

"Ire-reconstitute natin. Ready na 'yun. I was talking with OIC DILG (Department of Interior and Local Government) na i-ready na rin yung dalawang court room inside Sica (Special Intensive Care Area at Camp Bagong Diwa)," he said.

The high court last Tuesday designated the Taguig RTC to handle the cases against the Maute members upon Aguirre's request after the court personnel voiced their concern over their security.

The cases were originally filed in Cagayan de Oro RTC.

The SC has also designated the Sica at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City, instead of Camp Evangelista in Cagayan de Oro City to be the temporary detention facility for the suspects to be arrested.

Among those charged with rebellion following the proclamation of martial law in Mindanao last May 23 are Maute matriarch Ominta Romato Maute, former Marawi City mayor Fajad Salic and suspected bomb maker Mohammad Noaim Maute. (SunStar Philippines)
