Landslide hits Catbalogan village

RESIDENTS of Purok 6, Barangay Mercedes in Catbalogan City, Samar, went into panic, as a landslide occurred again around 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 19.

The residents said the weather was fine Wednesday night when the landslide happened. No one was hurt in the incident.

The City Government immediately dispatched teams to monitor, assess and help people in the area.

Rene Castino, a radio disk jockey in Catbalogan City who posted photos of the incident, said a landslide also happened in the same area in December 2014 and killed 23 people.

Authorities have repeatedly warned residents to evacuate from the "landslide-prone" area.

The City Council has purchased a lot in Purok 4, Barangay Payao to be used as relocation site for landslide victims. Some residents, however, unheeded the advice, citing livelihood opportunities. (SunStar Philippines)
