Arayat mayor on TV series: ‘We’re not overacting’

ARAYAT -- Mayor Emmanuel Alejandrino on Thursday, July 20, asserted that the local government here is not “overacting” on its plan to sue television giant ABS-CBN over its allegedly “damaging” portrayal of Arayat town as a “haven for terrorists” in its series “Ang Probinsiyano.”

This, after some netizens branded the local government’s action as “overacting,” saying the TV series is just fictional action-drama aimed at entertaining its viewers.

"Ang Probinsyano" is a television series about a provincial cop starring Coco Martin. It is shown nationwide on the network's Primetime Bida and globally through ABS-CBN's The Filipino Channel.

In its latest series, it talks of a terrorist group operating in Mt. Arayat, a popular tourist site in the town, which "SPO2 Ricardo 'Cardo' Dalisay," the popular character played by Martin in the TV series, which Dalisay will try to eliminate.

But Alejandrino asserted that the TV series veered from its fictional plot when it started portraying a “true place in a town and province.”

“Paanong overacting ‘yun? Kahit fictional lang ‘yan, ang pine-present ay totoong bayan at nakakaapekto na ito sa maling paraan. Fictional pa ba ‘yun? Gusto lang namin itama ang mali at protektahan ang bayan naming (How is that overacting? Although it’s fictional, what they are presenting is a true town and province. Is that still fictional? We just want to correct what’s wrong and protect our town),” he said.

Alejandrino also noted that the terrorism and insurgency issues tackled in the TV series touch a sensitive part of the town’s past when it was allegedly branded a “rebels' den.”

“Parang binalik nila kami dun sa panahon na tinalikuran namin e. Galing kami dun sa kaguluhan na ‘yun bago ako nakaupo. Parang pinitik nila ‘yung dating problema ng bayan na matagal namin inayos (It’s like they brought us back to the past which we turned our backs from. We came from that mess before I sat down [as mayor]. It seemed they touched on the problem which we have long ago solved),” he stressed.

He added that the local government’s intent to file a case against television giant ABS-CBN is an act to protect the “already damaged” image and reputation of Arayat and its residents caused by the TV series.

Alejandrino emphasized that their plan to take legal measures is just to stop the TV series from causing further damage to the town whose tourism and economy have already been hurt.

He said that they are now seeking the help of the Provincial Board in backing the resolution passed by Municipal Council condemning the negative portrayal of “Ang Probinsyano” about the town.
