Locsin Dance Icons

THE Locsin Dance Workshop (LDW) will celebrate its 70th Anniversary this coming August 4 to 6 with a memorabilia Exhibit, a Gala Performance, and an Alumni Night gathering at their studios in Quirino and Lanang.

This celebration is surely a milestone in the lives of the studio’s students as well as for Davao City, location of the oldest dance institution in the Philippines. Rehearsals are underway in both studios and theater in preparation for the coming event.

Former students from abroad and other parts of the Philippines are arriving to participate in one way or another, in this event, which has been aptly called Icons.

The gala performance will feature old favorites of previous recitals namely: La Filipiniana, Black Or White, Panalangin, Swans, and Magkaugnay.

Weaving them together is a thread of dance forms that have been offered at LDW in its 70 years of existence.

To spice it up even more are Nonie Buencamino, LDW’s favorite host, and Joey Ayala who will sing his signature song, “ang walang kamata yang” Magkaugnay, which is one of Agnes Locsin’s most performed choreography.

Former and current students with age ranging from 10 to 75 years old, are polishing up their moves to participate in the Alumni Night gathering on August 6 at Locsin-Quirino.

No holds barred for this festive reunion where there will be singing, oration, and dancing of ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap, flamenco, folk dance, hip hop, including the martial arts…all in one night of robust dancing. Founded in 1947 by the late Carmen D. Locsin, the Locsin Dance Workshop is now under the helm of daughters Bing and Agnes Locsin.

The performances will be participated in by LDW’s most well-known past and present students, dancers, and dance groups / schools greatly influenced by the sister act.

Aside from Ayala and Buencamino, other performers are Sonny Locsin, BiagGaongen, Monique Uy, Samantha Martin, Gaye Galiluyo, Georgette Sanchez, Sarah Anne Alejandro, John Ababon, and Kris-Belle Paclibar M, to name but a few.

Join them, interact, and watch them perform in Icons on August 4 to 5 at Locsin-Lanang and at the Alumni Night on August 6 at Locsin-Quirino.
