Ex-cop shoots family, kills self

A FORMER policeman committed suicide after he shot dead his wife, son, and stepdaughter in Barangay Valladolid, Carcar City, Cebu, past 5 a.m. Sunday, July 23.

Chief Inspector Jose Liddawa, the city police commander, identified the former cop as Joel Belamide Lopez, who shot himself using an M16 rifle inside his residence.

Liddawa said Lopez, 36, possibly used the same high-powered rifle in killing his wife Jelyn Lapiña Lopez, 36; stepdaughter Angel May Lapiña, 12; and son Myir Lapiña Lopez, 8.

They were all shot in the head, Liddawa said.

Before the incident, Jelyn and Lopez were arguing over financial problems. A series of gunbursts then followed.

Jelyn's grandfather went to couple's house and find the victims sprawled on the floor bloodied.

Lopez, a former Police Officer 2, reportedly entered the service in 2006. He was dismissed from the service in 2013, after he failed to attend several hearings for a drug case.
