P100-M flood control project in Calbayog ongoing

CATBALOGAN CITY -- The Samar First District Engineering Office (SFDEO) of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said there is an ongoing construction of flood control project along Jibatang River in Barangay Lonoy, Calbayog City.

The project is worth P100 million and is under the 2017 regular infrastructure fund of the DPWH.

The agency reported that Jibatang River, with an estimated terrain elevation of 45 meters above sea level, is often flooded especially during heavy rains.

“The reason behind the construction of flood control structure along Jibatang River (upstream)… is the safety and health conditions of the residents living in the area are jeopardized,” the DPWH said.

“Malaki ang maitutulong ng proyektong ito para sa amin, kundi dahil dito, palagi kaming inaabot ng mataas na baha tuwing may mga kalamidad na

dumarating,” one of the locals added.

The construction covers the drainage and slope protection structure and is projected to be completed in 180 days.

The project is under the General Appropriations Act 2017 with 701.25 linear meters reinforced concrete river protection works on steel sheet piles foundation. (SunStar Philippines)
