Mango summit slated in August

A NATIONWIDE Mango Summit will be held on August 2 for Mindanao by the Department of Agriculture (DA) following the decrease of mango production nationwide, said Agriculture undersecretary Evelyn Laviña during the 4th Davao Investment Conference on Saturday, July 22, at the SMX Convention Center, SM Lanang Premier, Davao City.

According to Laviña, their department was alarmed by the decrease in the production volume of certain crops in the country including mangoes. Because of this, they are conducting a nationwide summit in separate and select areas in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The venue of which is yet to be finalized. The summit will be open to all interested mango stakeholders.

Based on the data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, in Davao Region, there is a 2.89 percent decrease for mango production from 54,336 metric tons in 2015 to only 52,765 metric tons only last year. Most of these mangoes were produced from Davao del Sur with 41,975 metric tons in 2015, decreasing to only 40,654.35 in 2016.

Mango Carabao production in Davao Region decreased by 3.10 percent from 48,721 metric tons in 2015 to only 47,212 metric tons in 2016.

Most of the Mango Carabao in the region are produced from Davao del Sur, with the province producing 40,335 metric tons in 2015; the province's production decreased to 39,024 metric tons in 2016.
