A POLICE vehicle with five personnel of the municipal social welfare development office of Sibagat town, Agusan del Sur was fired by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) at around 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 27.
The social workers were on their way to distribute cash pay outs to beneficiaries of the government’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program when they were fired upon by the rebels in Barangay Agfa, Sibagat, Agusan del Sur.
Policemen, with the social workers, engaged with the suspected rebels, killing one of them.
No one was wounded among the social workers and the policemen.
The rebels are believed to be members of the Northeast Mindanao Regional Committee of the NPA front.
During the clearing operations, police operatives recovered an unidentified male body of the dead rebel, AK47 rifle, one bandolier and four magazines of AK47 rifle containing 91 live ammunition, three dud ammunition, and three fired cartridges case allegedly from AK47.
Troops of the Agusan del Sur Police Provincial Safety Company and the 8th Special Forces Battalion conducted hot a pursuit operation towards the mountainous area for possible arrest of the rebels.
Caraga police, meanwhile, established checkpoints in coordination with the Philippine Army for possible exits of fleeing rebels.
Chief Superintendent Rolando Felix, Caraga Police regional director, said that they will continue to work with the community to ensure safety and security.
“The Caraga police condemns this treacherous act of this lawless armed group and its complete disregard for the safety of government workers whose only purpose was to release government funds to the poorest of the poor, the 4P’s beneficiaries. Rest assured we will continue to work with the community in the conduct of peace and security operations to ensure the safety and security of the Caraganons,” Felix said.
