Tancontian wins 2 golds in Women's Festival

DAVAO City's pride Sydney Sy Tancontian is now set for her Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2017 debut following her double gold medal finish in the just-concluded 4th Women's Martial Arts Festival judo competition at the SM Harrison Plaza in Malate, Manila.

The 17-year-old University of Sto. Tomas varsity scholar topped the under -78 kilogram (kg) juniors division and the +70 kg cadets division besting his rivals in the round-robin format tournament.

The Dabawenya outclassed all her +70 kg opponents Kathleen Mae Ferriols of UST, Joyce Ann Barsaga of De La Salle University (DLSU) and Sofia Marie Belonio of the Far Eastern University (FEU) in full points (100).

In the Under-78 kg, she also defeated UST's Aisilinn Yap and Colline Pecdasen on the same dominating fashion.

Tanctontian also said that joining the women's festival helped in her preparations for the SEA Games although she expects tougher opposition in the biennial event slated in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia next month.

"Nakatulong po ang pagsali ko sa women's festival para ma-evaluate ko and nung mga coaches kung saan po ako dapat mag-improve pa," she said, excited about her first-ever SEA Games stint.

The decorated judoka and wrestler said, "I'm excited and kinakabahan po at the same time kasi at last, I will be able fulfill my family's dream na makapag-compete ako sa SEA Games."

She has been training with the national team and is upbeat about her chances in the Games.
