Retired cop shot dead in Leyte

A RETIRED policeman was shot dead by motorcycle-riding men in Villaba town in Leyte on Monday, July 31.

The victim was identified as Hegino Gaspay, 52, a resident of Barangay Libagong, Villaba.

He was shot around 7 a.m. in Barangay A, Tumamak.

Security forces are now tracking the perpetrators.

The police are yet to determine the motive behind the incident.

In Northern Samar, a 53-year-old fisherman was also shot dead by unidentified men around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, July 30.

The police identified the victim as Agustin Adora, a resident of Barangay Tarusan, Laoang, Northern Samar.

Initial police investigation revealed that one of the perpetrators called Adora to go out for a talk around 9:15 p.m. Sunday.

"Several minutes later, the wife heard a gunfire from a distance that frightened her. Her husband did not return to their house. In the morning (July 31), the cadaver of the victim was found," the report said.

The police said Adora was brought to Dr. G.B. Tan Memorial Hospital in Laoang town for post-mortem examination.

Police are still conducting a follow-up investigation to determine the perpetrators and the motive in the killing. (SunStar Philippines)
