1 killed, 4 hurt in Nueva Ecija highway blast

A TRICYCLE driver was killed while four persons, including two minors, were hurt after an improvised explosive device exploded along the national road in Barangay Pasong Intsik, Guimba town, Nueva Ecija province Monday afternoon.

The fatality was identified as Marvin Barrientos, 40, a resident of Barangay Pacac.

The four injured victims included two minors, a public school teacher identified as Joe Laurence Mata, and a tricycle driver who rammed the one driven by Barrientos after the latter went wayward.

Inspector Ronald Stockton, deputy chief of police, said on Tuesday that Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel from the Northern Luzon Command have yet to ascertain the explosive used by the culprits.

Residents believe it was a roadside bomb intended for a team of policemen who just passed by the road on board a police vehicle.

The policemen came from an investigation duty in a warehouse that was burned by suspected New People's Army members in nearby Nampicuan town Sunday.

Stockton said an investigation is ongoing and "could not say anything conclusive yet."

The EOD personnel recovered few suspected shrapnels from the area. (PNA)
