Drug suspect killed after resisting arrest in Barili

A SUSPECTED drug pusher was killed after allegedly attempting to shoot a police officer during a drug bust in Barangay Panil, Barili town, Cebu, around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, August 1.

Town Police Chief Jose Angelo Acupinpin identified the drug suspect as Ryan Avanceña who succumbed to a gunshot wound in the body.

He said Avanceña surrendered to the police during Oplan Tokhang on July 8, 2016, but surveillance in the past weeks confirmed his return to the illegal drug trade.

During the drug bust, a police officer bought two sachets of white crystals believed to be methamphetamine hydrochloride or "shabu" from Avanceña.

The police officer declared his identity. As he was about to be arrest Avanceña, the suspect shot him, but the officer was able to parry the gun.

Another police officer shot Avanceña, who was later rushed to Barili District Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Operatives seized a coin purse containing eight small sachets of shabu, a .45 pistol with magazine on its chamber loaded with six bullets, and a fired cartridge. (SunStar Cebu)
