Move to update boarding house ordinance under way

A BAGIUO ordinance regulating boarding houses needs to be updated for the convenience and safety of lodgers, a city councilor said.

Councilor Joel Alangsab proposed an amendment of a 1969 ordinance to include additional amenities for the boarders.

Alangsab’s proposal was approved on first reading and referred to the city council’s Committee on Laws for recommendation.

City Hall issued permits to 3,590 boarding houses and four dormitories this year.

The proposal came after the council was briefed by a City Hall team that inspected boarding houses.

Under the proposed measure, lodging establishments must have a study room equipped with reading tables, chairs and internet connection.

Security cameras must also be installed.(Aileen Refuerzo)
