Oro baristas exhibit latte art skills for a day

COFFEE art took center stage in one of Higalaay Festival's events with the 2017 “Latte Art Throwdown” at the Centrio Ayala Mall activity center on Sunday, August 6.

As an annual event alongside the city's fiesta, the Latte Art Throwdown is organized by the Mindanao Barista Community, the Jamaican F&B Training Center Incorporated, the Barista Starter Pack, and the Filipino Bartending/Barista Innovators in Mindanao.

According to the event's organizers, Latte Art making is considered as one of the skills that will justly define the capacity of a barista. This is highlighted in the event as the city's renowned coffee shop owners and baristas were invited to show off their Latte art skills.

Latte Art is a trained craft among baristas and coffee shop owners wherein coffee is decorated with an image produced through mixing coffee with milk or foam. So much training is needed to master the art of coffee decoration as it is one of the major requirements before becoming a certified barista.

Some of the most well-known latte art patterns that baristas do are the rosetta, ballerina, swan, fern, heart, apple, and butterfly.

The competition was divided into two categories, professional and student. Being the only institute in Cagayan de Oro City to cater barista training, Jamaican F&B Training Center presented fifteen of their students as participants.

On the other hand, the seventeen baristas on the professional category came from various beloved coffee shops all over the city such as Krispy Kreme, Coffeeholic, Cafe Pilar, JCO, Mai Craft, Espressini, and others.

The 2017 Latte Art Throwdown was filled with the excitement and bond of the baristas who are showing off their skills in the craft. Each of them aims to be unique to the other baristas by creating complicated patterns in their mugs of coffee.

Some of the barista judges of the event are renowned baristas and coffee shop owners from Bukidnon who have gained the respect in the craft of latte art through years of practice.

Representatives from the Oro Chamber of Commerce, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, and the Torani products in the Philippines were also present in the event.

The coffee Latte arts were judged according to definition or the clarity of the latte image, aesthetic beauty, symmetry, degree of difficulty, and creativity.

After a whole afternoon of coffee mixing and decorating, Carlven Agbayani came out as champion for the student category while Carlitos Candido of Mai Craft was proclaimed as champion for the professional category.

Aside from receiving trophies, the two winners will be given the chance to participate in the “Latte Art Battle of Champions” which will be held in Mindanao later this year.
