HOST-Delaware got its revenge after defeating Asia-Pacific, represented by Negros Occidental, 4-0 in the championship of the Senior League Softball World Series 2017.
The Negrense squad outsmarted Delaware in the elimination phase with a 1-0 triumph in the ninth inning, giving the Asia-Pacific team the top spot in Pool A.
Despite their defeat, the silver finish is as precious as gold for the young Filipina clouters who traveled thousands of miles from Negros Occidental to Manila, Seoul, then New York to Delaware.
During the finals, both teams played tough in the first four innings by denying each other of scoring any run. It wasn't until the fifth inning that the host team was able to pull out from the deadlock with Sierra Livingston scoring their first as Kara Powell hit a ground on Kaith Ezra Jalandoni's pitching error.
The Negrense batters tried to equalize the score in the bottom of fifth, but failed to even reach the second base.
With a 1-0 lead, the host team earned momentum as Jakayla Sample made a homerun to extend the advantage to 2-0.
As Taylor Wroten grounded out, Corrin Farris advanced to the second and eventually scored Delaware's third on Kylie Kruger's ground ball to Filipina center fielder Angela Solidarios.
Kruger then scored her team's fourth on error by left fielder Josiemers Maguad.
With Glory Alonzo taking over the pitching task, the Philippine squad eventually stopped the bleeding, but failed to make good in the bottom of sixth after Mary Joy Maguad, Jalandoni and Chastene Jover were all grounded out as both teams were scoreless in the final seventh.
Meanwhile, the Negros Occidental little leaguers yesterday flew to Portland, Oregon for the World Series Little League 2017 scheduled August 9 to 16.
The Negros Occidental team is in Pool B alongside Floyds Knobs Community Club LL of Indiana, Softball Femenino de Coamo LL of Puerto Rico, Lake Air LL of Texas and host-Oregon.
