Oro moms converge for Earth Week

MOTHERS throughout Cagayan de Oro City gathered on April 21 to be a part of a mother and baby-centered event in celebration of the Earth Week at Cetrio Ayala Mall, Cagayan de Oro City.

The Modern Nanays of Mindanao (MNM), a peer support organization that consists of mothers, in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB)-Northern Mindanao, hosted one of the highlight events of the three-day Earth Week celebration: the Great Cloth Diaper Change.

According to Ayana Flores, one of the core members of MNM’s organizing team, the Great Cloth Diaper Change is an international event wherein participating mothers from all over the world simultaneously change from disposable to cloth diapers.

Last April 21, around 150 mothers with their babies in tow gathered at the Centrio Ayala Mall event center to participate in the international event, which occurred around 11 a.m.

Modern Nanays of Mindanao, a promoter of breastfeeding, baby wearing and cloth diapering, encouraged the mothers of Cagayan de Oro to shift from using disposal diapers to cloth diapers through discussions all about cloth diapers, its kinds, how to wash them, where to buy one, and the environmental and economic advantages in using them.

Tapping the DENR-EMB, the environment bureau also talked about the climate change, plastic problem, solid waste management, and solutions for said problems.

“Nga ang mga mama makabalo pud unsa ang angay buhaton sa sulod sa balay para ma-manage nila ang ilang garbage, and ilang solid waste (So that the mothers will also know what they should do in terms of managing garbage, their solid wastes, inside their homes),” Flores said.

According to Real Diaper Association, a group that organized the international Great Cloth Diaper Change, reusable cloth diapers can reduce waste for families with children in diapers by more than 50 percent, and help reduce exposure of babies’ skin and lungs to the chemicals in disposable diapers.

The Great Cloth Diaper Change is just one of the events help in Centrio Ayala Mall in celebration of the Earth Week that help plant the idea to Kagay-anons to adjust or change their lifestyles in order to aid in saving Mother Earth.

Other events include: Junk Art Workshop by Dire Husi Artsville and Earth talks last Friday, April 20, and urban gardening workshop by the City Social Welfare and Development and a concert for Mother Earth by the DENR-EMB on Sunday, April 22.
