THE Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) announced that the fighting in Marawi City is now confined in about a square kilometer “general area.”
Captain Jo-ann Petinglay, Wesmincom information officer, said the Maute group is believed to be holding an estimated 50 to 70 hostages while holed up in the one square kilometer area.
The fighting entered on the 79th day Wednesday, August 9. It started on May 23 when the Maute group went berserk and occupied several establishments in Marawi City.
Petinglay said they have recorded 539 Maute group members killed and 607 firearms recovered as of Wednesday, August 9.
The terrorists killed a total of 45 civilians while 1,728 others were rescued.
Four of the 1,728 civilians were rescued on Friday, August 4, in the vicinity of Lake Lanao. They were able to escape from the main battle area.
Three of the four are from this city while the other one from Iligan City. They were given immediate medical attention.
Petinglay said that 122 soldiers were killed as of Tuesday, August 8, due to the continuous fighting in the Main Battle area. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
