Expired medicines found in Bontoc hospital

AN INSPECTION team from the Department of Health (DOH) found out that the Bontoc General Hospital has been using expired reagents, kits, and medicines.

The visiting DOH team, during an inspection last July 20, found out the hospital has been using expired reagents and kits at the laboratory section and expired medicines at the emergency room and dialysis unit.

Dr. Penelope Domogo, who is the current officer in charge of the hospital, was asked to immediately submit a letter of explanation after the inspection team noted the use of expired items which include glucose and cholesterol reagents, syphilis kits, amiodarone, and sodium bicarbonate.

In line with the violations, a concerned citizen urged President Rodrigo Duterte to investigate the matter as it placed the entire medical profession and the Provincial Government of Mt. Province into shame and the lives of patients in jeopardy.

The petition also urged the suppliers of the expired medicines, reagents, and kits must be included in the investigation including the members of the bids and awards committee to validate their culpability in the transaction.

It further added the inspectorate and acceptance team must be investigated as to why these expired reagents and kits at the laboratory section and the expired medicines at the emergency room and dialysis unit were accepted.

Also included in the proposed investigation is the pharmacy section of the hospital, the doctors and nurses on duty in both laboratory section, emergency room, and dialysis unit.

The concerned official of the hospital has yet to issue a statement on the matter. (Roderick Osis)
