Couple nabbed for illegal dental practice in Davao

THE National Bureau of Investigation-Southern Mindanao Regional Office (NBI-Semro) warned the public on Friday against fake dental clinics, following the arrest of two unlicensed dentists in Davao City on Thursday afternoon.

The suspects were identified as Joelan Estoy and his wife, Rezil, who are residents of Purok 3-C, Isla Verde, Barangay 23-C.

Authorities arrested the couple and seized substandard dental equipment inside their home-based clinic.

The couple was brought to the City Prosecution Office on Friday for inquest proceedings. They are currently detained at the NBI-Semro jail facility.

NBI agents said they received a letter from Anti-Scam Unit head Simplicio Sagarino, requesting support for the arrest the two suspects practicing illegal dentistry. The request was based on the complaint filed by the Davao City Dental Chapter chairman Dr. Carlos Capitan.

Members of the Anti-Scam Unit earlier conducted surveillance in Isla Verde and confirmed that a certain alias Editha Dando (Rezil Estoy) has been practicing dentistry without license from Professional Regulation Commission.

NBI-Semro director Arnold Rosales said the suspects offered oral prophylaxis-deep cleaning, tooth filing, installing orthodontic braces, fabricating dentures and retainers.

“Fake dental clinics and fake dentists do not only exist or can be found in Manila. Meron din ilan sa kanila nandidito sa Davao City. Susceptible pa naman ang ngipin kaya dapat tayo maging ma-ingat. Mura nga yung services pero hindi ka naman nakakasiguro kung safe ba ito…,” Rosales said.

An undercover customer transacted with Editha, and availed the dental services.

The couple was arrested after the undercover agent handed a P400 payment to them. Recovered from the suspects were dental equipments, other instruments, and dental materials/supplies.

Rosales said NBI has so far conducted two operations against fake dentists and made three arrests since last year.
