Coach to Duterte: We need good volleyball gym

WITH Duterte as the next President of the Republic of the Philippines, we can have the first standard sized volleyball gym with floors made of modern taraflex floors anywhere in the Davao Region.

It sounds like such a simple wish for Tagum City Lady coach Mylene Que from a myriad of solutions that we can offer from the Davao Region in terms of helping the country rise up from years of ignominy. Forgive the last word but at least I did not write "myriad of problems" because solutions are bigger if you mention the name Duterte.

Still, I can take that because that wish is higher than just wishing the Davao City Mayor a Happy Birthday knowing him to be so untraditional about life and times, even politics or governance.

He is a non-celebrity. If Robin Padilla will succeed in making a movie with the famous title Digong, then that would be successful indeed. If Duterte is a volleyball player, he would be just as altruistic for never celebrating birthday for his own glory while his neighbors here and there suffer the pangs of hunger.

No, he won’t wait until 12 midnight just to receive his Best Server award because he will just shrug off any recognitions like that simply because he doesn’t want any awards since meeting the needs of the least of his people is in itself fulfilling.

Sleepless in Panabo and Davao Cities

The last time I stayed late till the wee hours of dawn in Panabo was many years ago covering the senatorial elections with elected senator Joey Lina having his last turn for the microphone blurting the announcement that everywhere including Panabo are so many of his relatives like cartoLina, bahaLina, gasoLina and ReynaLina.

That brings us to our sportswriting intentions with Reynalina Raterta receiving the Best Server award of the marathon one-day volleyball league as part of the Araw Ng Panabo celebration.

It was an all-Davao City Finals with Calvin Sarte showing his mastery of the games as team captain of Optima Davao which emerged champion in close quarter battle with UM-Davao in the 1st Mayor James Gamao Men and Women Open Volleyball Tournament.

It was May Luna who gave us the most electrifying story of the night establishing a 2-game championship-of-their-own winning streak against main rival, the multi-titled Davao City National High School.

The only stop was at the devoted Task Force Davao security check halfway in the 12 midnight drive from Panabo to Davao City.

It was less expensive to be in the 12-hour hotel industry than driving straight home to the boondocks then back again Sunday for a reunion with Retired Police Inspector Boy Fucanan, the famous basketball heartthrob of the 70’s and 80’s. All I got for an answer was "fully booked."

Even the internet attendant at Ilustre St. said that I only have an hour to do my work because they will be closing at 2 am. Desperate at completing my work before sunrise I had to ask if there was a 24-hour internet anywhere near so she pointed me to a place on Duterte Street.

Whether it is about governance or peace and security or a street, the name Duterte rings a bell.

There is a greater clarion call than just staying late at night to cover some senators. Let us tread that path then.

Sports for freedom, peace and less injuries with Taraflex floors.
