THE Philippine government has issued Alert Level 1 or "precautionary phase" to the Filipinos in Guam and Northern Marianas Islands in the wake of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's threat to launch missile strike in the US Pacific territory.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), in a statement on Tuesday, said Alert Level 1 means the situation is still developing.
With this, the DFA said, "Filipino nationals are encouraged to closely monitor the news from reliable media outlets and official advisories from the Government of Guam, and other US authorities, as well as the Philippine Consulate General in Guam."
Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano assured the public that contingency plans are in place in Guam to assist Filipinos should it be necessary.
He also said that the DFA and the Consulate General continue to monitor the situation closely.
"Filipinos are encouraged to go about their daily business as usual, as the situation in Guam remains normal," Cayetano said.
About 42,835 Filipinos are living and working in Guam.
