Duterte meets Manila fire victims

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday met victims of the predawn fire in San Miguel district, Manila.

Duterte visited the San Miguel Church, which serves as a temporary shelter for some 250 families left homeless by the blaze, around 7 p.m.

He spoke to the affected residents and promised to provide them financial aid for their speedy recovery.

The President said he would give P5,000 to each family.

"DSWD (Department of Social Welfare and Development) will provide food packs... [It includes] rice, six kilos; three cans of corned beef; three cans of meat loaf; six sachets of three-in-one coffee; additional blankets; bottled water; and hand-woven mat," Duterte said.

The predawn fire destroyed at least 100 houses in Barangay 645, an area near the MalacaƱang Palace, in San Miguel on Wednesday.

The fire was declared under control past 6 a.m.

Two individuals were injured following the incident. (SunStar Philippines)
