Vugt: On spirituality and health

FAITH in healing is difficult, especially when we are surrounded by negativity and exposure to failure, sickness and death. When reinforced daily and pervading our consciousness, we become afraid to trust that something good can happen to us. And yet, faith is the key.

In the Bible, Jesus never uttered “I healed you!” or declared that it was his power that had healed instead, he always emphasized that it was the faith of people who dared to get close to him, to call out to him and to hope that their lives could be touched by a stranger which enabled them to receive the grace of Jesus’ presence fully, and be healed.

An example is Matthew 9:22, “Jesus turned and saw her. ‘take heart, daughter,’ he said, ‘your faith has healed you.’ And the woman was healed at that moment.”

Another one is Mark 10:52, “'Go', said Jesus, ‘your faith has healed you.’ Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.”

Today, the same is asked of us: to have faith and accept healing. The Lord is ever merciful, showering us with love and forgiveness. Sometimes, we reject his mercy because of thoughts of being unworthy or of being too sick to be healed.

However, we should remember how it is not our worth that determines the Lord’s love. Likewise, we should never forget how it is not the level of sickness that dictates what the lord can and cannot do. He is ever merciful, but it is up to us to accept his mercy and spread it.

How do we celebrate this Jubilee Year of Mercy in Spirituality and Health?

First, let us affirm who we are in Christ and let us remember we are what we say. Words are powerful, especially words we ourselves utter. They are a way of committing our thoughts to reality and of affirming what we believe in. Some people would scoff at the thought of declaring things to ourselves, but there has been research establishing that it works.

What have you got to lose? Try it! How?

Begin your day with a declaration: “I am happy! I am healthy! I am at peace! I am immensely joyful! I am abundantly blessed! I am unconditionally loved.” Also, do not resist the smile that automatically comes to your face upon recognition of these things.

Second, let us ask and receive mercy.

In times of doubt, when a particular sickness make you feel weak and hopeless, hold firm to your faith and ask for a belief in his mercy as well! Recite a little prayer: “I am healed! I am completely healed! I am miraculously healed! So be it, so it is, In Jesus’ name! Amen.” And believe in it, actively and consciously, every day.

Third, let us have faith in God’s healing through natural ways. If we do, we will feel God’s healing in experiencing the best state of our body, which can be achieved through the abundance of God’s blessings and natural medicine all around us. (to be continued)
