Alvarez wants Comelec chair to ‘consider resigning’

AFTER telling the Bureau of Customs chief to quit his post, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez is asking another high-ranking government official to resign over a corruption allegation.

Alvarez said Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Andres Bautista should "seriously consider stepping down" from his post to save the poll body's integrity.

“I think Chairman Bautista should consider that seriously. Kasi when you head that agency na handling elections sa bansa, kailangan po talagang credible iyan. Kapag may bahid na iyan, medyo hindi na po maganda,” Alvarez said.

The Department of Justice has already directed the National Bureau of Investigation to probe Bautista for alleged ill-gotten wealth while the Bureau of Internal Revenue is also reportedly investigating the poll chief for possible tax evasion.

The allegation stemmed from the revelation of his wife, Patricia, that Bautista allegedly amassed at least P1 billion in ill-gotten wealth through questionable dealings.

If proven true, Bautista might be held liable for misdeclaring his wealth in his 2016 Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net worth, which amounts to P176.3 million.

Alvarez also indicated that the House of Representatives may conduct an investigation on Bautista.

Kabayan Partylist Representative Harry Roque has already filed a resolution to probe Bautista. (SunStar Philippines)
