Pa, son killed in police raid

A MAN and his son were killed by police operatives after they allegedly resisted arrest in a raid at Sitio Gaboc, Barangay Malaiba in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental Wednesday evening, August 16.

Canlaon police chief Wilfredo Alarcon Jr. identified the fatalities as Ruel and Joel Cantero, who were members of a gun-for-hire group.

Armed with a search warrant for violation of Republic Act 10591 or Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, the police raided the Cantero residence around 7:35 p.m.

However, the Canteros fired at them that led to a shootout.

Alarcon said they shot the suspects to neutralize them, but the firefight resulted to their deaths.

He added that they decided to conduct a search after they received information that both suspects possessed firearms.

Recovered were a .45 caliber pistol loaded with a magazine and five ammunition used by Jonel, a .45 caliber loaded with magazine and three ammunition used by his father, and fired cartridge cases of M16.

Alarcon said the elder Cantero was a former hit man while his son was one of the suspects in the series of recent shooting incidents in the city.

Five of the group’s other members are at-large.
