COMMITMENT. I was able to get the commitment of the one and only king of novelty songs Max Surban to appear as guest performer in the “Pasiawit: Paskohang Dalit” slated on Dec. 2 at SM City Cebu Seaside. It’s a fund-raising concert of the newly-created Sugboanong Musikero, a club of Cebu musicians, show bands, solo artists, comic duos and other performers.
INITIATIVE. Truth to tell, there’s one person that should be credited for his initiative in organizing all homegrown entertainers. Margarito Ornopia Jr., fondly called Gitoy by his friends, took the very first move to gather them in a beach party. Gitoy’s close friend, bassist Edgardo Butalid of Auctioned Band Cebu, did the dirty job of informing the performers via social media and personal invitation.
HISTORY. To us in Sugboanong Musikero, the Dec. 2 show is such a historic event because it would be the first time that majority, if not all, of our musicians and other performers would be seen and heard in one venue or the same stage.
SURPRISE. When my good friend keyboardist/musician Roland Suarez marked his 60th birthday last Thursday night, he never thought that his and Luz’s New Zealand-based daughter Lady would make a surprise appearance right in front of them and their guests. Days before, she never hinted that she could come to her dad’s big day—but she did! Roland is working for the Bureau of Internal Revenue.
MOVIES. This week, a lot of Filipino movies continue to screen in local cinemas as part of the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino. August is the month of the national language. Let’s watch them as our way of supporting the national and local film industry. (For comments, text 0932-277-8771)
