2 sisters drown off Naga beach while attending party

TWO sisters drowned Monday afternoon, August 21, while they were swimming on a beach in Barangay Langtad, City of Naga.

Juicyphel Obal, 16, and her younger sister, Juyce, 13, were attending the birthday party of their father's boss at Guanzon Beach Resort when they decided to take a swim on the beach.

Police Officer1 Frank Alemento of the City of Naga Police Station said it was only at 3:30 p.m. that the girls' father, Jufhil Quilano, noticed that his daughters were no longer in the water.

Police believed that the girls were swept by strong waves.

After a brief search, Juicyphel’s body was found floating a few meters away from where she and her sister were last seen swimming.

Juyce’s body was only found at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Officials of the City of Naga Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CNDRRMO) said Juyce’s body was found in the waters near the plant of Petronas Energy Corp., which is 500 meters away from where she and her sister drowned.

City of Naga Councilor Carmelino Cruz, who heads the CNDRRMO, said he will recommend to Mayor Kristine Vanessa Chiong not to allow swimming at the beach front of Guanzon Beach Resort temporarily.

Cruz said they discovered that the resort has no lifeguard and has not put in place measures that will prevent people from swimming towards the deep portion of the beach.

He urged the management to do something about it to prevent the same incident. (JKV)
