A spring/summer hair competition

EVER wonder how showbiz celebrities and models can hit the red carpet with just simple ponytails, yet manage to look chic and put-together, while many of us have bad hair days? Well, the pros have a few tricks up their sleeves that can make your hair look on-point, too and renowned hairstylist Laura Charlton, creative director for David Salon gave the attendees hairstyle and hair color tutorial at the recent Nouvelle Hair Competition.

Laura has one goal: To bring together talented team of skilled professionals passionate about their work in the beauty industry, and equally as passionate about making their client’s look and feel their best.

Laura conducted an exciting hair styling/cutting demonstration, taking someone from the audience and transforming her in front of her audience's eyes. I noticed immediately in Laura an air of complete command, authority and confidence, an energy that communicated: "I know I'm great at this, and have nothing to prove. I just want to help people feel and be their best."

Seeing Laura in action, I knew I wanted to understand more about how she had done all these -- climbed to the top of a very cut-throat, male-dominated field, launched a successful business, and become one of the best in her field with her celebrity clients.

Salon owners and Davao's renowned hairstylists gathered in hordes at Pinnacle Hotel to witness the competition last May 28. The event was hosted by Magic 89.1 DJ Kevin Rage and actress-host Valerie Concepcion, so stunning in her floral print dress.

A sumptuous dinner was served as everyone were excited to see the latest trends in haircut and colors this year. Nouvelle, the official hair color sponsor, provided the tools for the hair stylist to work their magic on.

Winners took home cash prizes and Nouvelle giveaways to the delight of the participants. A total of 26 contenders fought for for the grand prize, but it was Hair Studio that won the competition hands down.

Hair Studio hair expert and senior consultant Roger "Ogie" Duran won the top prize, while the first runner-up was Young Reyes of Manestream and second runner-up was Julius Maneco of Salon De Rose.

Through this competition, Nouvelle allowed Davao hairstylists to compete on creativity, skill and the ability to perform under pressure.

Competition categories included technical and fashion hair and hair color selection.

In preparation for the showdown, the competitors are highly focused, finessing the details of their styles in anticipation of show day. They all agree that there’s nothing like the thrill of competing.
