Marco Polo Plaza always comes up with a week-long foodfest to celebrate our country’s Independence Day. With food expert Jessica Avila as consultant, the hotel presented a culinary journey (it ended four days ago) dubbed “Independencia: A Tribute to Filipino Heroes.” The spread featured the favorite dishes of some of our heroes. In the list were the Tinolang Manok which Jose Rizal craved for; Andres Bonifacio’s Lechon Manok; Apolinario Mabini’s Uttong Balotong; Gregorio del Pilar’s Arroz ala Cubana, and more. These classic Filipino dishes were among those added to the international buffet at Cafe Marco. It was launched last June 10 during a dinner affair for media friends which was preceded by a short program featuring the Cebu Dance Theater Company.

Barefoot Barbecue is the latest offering of Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa every Saturday. Setting is the resort’s beachside where colorful mats, low tables and oversized floor pillows are arranged to set the mood of a barbecue party. A huge grill takes centerstage and all kinds of meat (seafood, poultry, lamb and beef) are available. The feel is an open-air market where guests make their choices of what to put on the grill. To make the outdoor experience more exciting, there’s a string quartet playing soft music. For inquiries, call the resort’s restaurant reservations at 231-8224.
