THE Department of Tourism (DOT) is initiating a Cruise Tourism Development Workshop to further boost the tourism industry in the Visayas, including Negros Occidental.
The three-day activity to be held in Iloilo City starting August 30 will gather tourism stakeholders in the Visayas, particularly those from Western, Central, and Eastern Visayas.
Cristine Mansinares, provincial supervising tourism operations officer, Wednesday, Augsut 23, said the DOT is rolling out its plan for the implementation the National Cruise Tourism Development Strategy.
Mansinares said that although Boracay in Western Visayas is being developed as base port for cruise vessels that can run cruise itineraries, several islands within considerable inter-port-distances are also being considered for the cruise program.
According to the agency's Market Development Group, the workshop aims to provide a venue for stakeholders in the Visayas to gain information about the cruise destinations in the country.
A three-year rolling plan for the development of cruise tourism in various destinations will be one of the major outputs of the said workshop, it added.
Mansinares said the workshop will also include a one-day observation visit to Caticlan-Boracay Port on August 30.
During this day, cruise ship Genting Dream will arrive at Boracay Island in Malay town, Aklan.
“This activity will afford the stakeholders, including us Negrenses, the opportunity to observe and witness the actual facilitation and handling of the cruise call and the shore excursion programs in Boracay,” she added.
