Village chief promotes organic hog raising

ANGELES CITY -- A village chief in this highly-urbanized city has underscored the relevance of organic hog-raising amid the bird flu scare.

Balibago village chief Rodelio Mamac encouraged the senior citizens association in his village to establish a backyard piggery at a vacant lot owned by the village.

The elderly used a seed capital of P100,000 donated by Foreign Affairs Secretary Allan Peter Cayetano when he was still a senator more than a year ago.

“Additional four pig pens are being constructed for our incoming 300 piglets. We are expecting 30 more sows to give birth next week up to September this year,” Mamac said.

Mamac said they feed the hogs with organic food they collect from restaurants located in the village.

“To ensure healthy and produce nice pork, we feed our pigs organic food by collecting reject vegetables in the market and left over foods from our restaurants in Barangay Balibago. No chemicals or antibiotics,” Mamac said.

“We also produce or sell organic lechon for the public. We encourage our senior citizens and youth to participate in our organic pig farming and Babuyang Walang Amoy project,” Mamac said.
