Tancontian loses to Myanmar opponent

SYDNEY Sy Tancontian of Davao City fell short in her debut game as she bowed against 2015 silver medalist and Olympian Aung Aye Aye of Myanmar via waza-ari during the 29th Southeast Asian Games judo competition yesterday at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

But according to many, lasting a match against a veteran judoka is a rare feat coming from a debuting black belt judoka of University of Sto. Tomas (UST).

In a Facebook live filmed by Gerard Lim during the fight, Tancontian most dominantly executed the attacks.

Aye Aye, however, leaned on her vast experiences to resist those attempts.

"Medyo kulang pa po talaga yung executions ko ng throw. Na feel ko din po na mas experienced po siya kesa sa akin," Tancontian said on her loss against Aye Aye.

She, however, is still waiting for a 'repacharge match', a chance wherein she could still fight for a bronze medal following the loss.

Her mother Janet Sy, in a separate interview, said her daughter needs more aggressiveness.

"Pero akala namin di niya matapos yung time kasi 2015 silver medalist and 2012 Olympian ka match niya," the proud mother said.
