Bird flu-affected poultry owners get P29-M compensation

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Poultry owners who were affected by the avian influenza virus outbreak in Pampanga and Nueva Ecija received on Monday, August 28, their indemnification check from the National Government.

President Rodrigo Duterte personally awarded the checks to the local government of San Luis, Pampanga and 14 poultry owners from Pampanga and Nueva Ecija during his visit at Heroes Hall in this capital city.

The local government of San Luis, where 421,132 fowls from six farms were culled, received an indemnification check amounting to P20,723,797. Mayor Venancio Macapagal personally received the check.

Aside from this, five poultry owners from the said town also got P5,000 cash grants and availed of the P20,000 from the national government while another five received P5,000 financial assistance.

Ruperto Vicmud of Barangay Laug, Mexico, Pampanga, which is inside the seven-kilometer controlled area, received some P2,535,640 after voluntarily culling the fowls in his poultry.

A P5,516,000 check was also awarded to Manuel Ortiz of San Isidro, Nueva Ecija as compensation to the 70,576 birds that were depopulated from his farm.

In Jaen, Nueva Ecija, two quail farms owned by Mary Grace Castro and Magdalena Nagum received P209,000 and P149,870 compensation respectively after a total of 100,421 quails from their farms were depopulated.

Agriculture Secretary Manny PiƱol, however, said that poultry owners from the affected areas are not allowed to raise fowls at least for the next three months as part of the disinfecting process.

But he assured affected businessmen, as well as the whole poultry industry of all possible necessary assistance to minimize the effects of the outbreak and help the industry rise again.
