DOH chief: Bird flu under control

THE Department of Health (DOH) said the public need no longer fear human case of bird flu as the department and Department of Agriculture (DA) already declared the virus under control.

DOH Secretary Paulyn Jean Ubial, in a press conference, said there are no cases of human transmission after a week of observation, due to the confirmation of Australian doctors that the strain of bird flu that affected Pampanga was H5N6, which is transmittable to humans.

Ubial said DOH is closely monitoring the cullers, or the people who were observing the poultry animals for certain days for flu-like manifestations so these birds will be slaughtered immediately as soon as these show any sign or symptom connected with the Avian Flu.

"Most of the cullers we have monitored were from the Armed Forces of the Philippines as they were the ones assisting all government agencies and affected growers in managing the bird-flu infested poultry farms," she said.

She, however, still advised the public to observe proper sanitation as clearing operations and assessments are still being done by DA in affected places.

On Sunday, September 3, the quarantined cullers in Pampanga will be released after 10 days of close observation.

Although there were 39 cullers who showed flu-like symptoms, DOH confirmed that they were all clear from the H5N6 strain.
