THE Cagayan de Oro City Government's online payment and billing system has resulted to a tax collection worth more than P2.3 million from January to July alone of this year.
In his report, City Treasurer Ramon Antonio Mendoza said the earnings during this period came from business tax, real property tax, building fees, and traffic violations, among others.
Mendoza said the new payment system has dramatically helped in the increase of its collections, since the process of the payment is made easier for the public.
The online payment system was initiated by the City Government to give convenience and hassle-free service to taxpayers as long as internet connection is available.
This program has also been lauded by the National Competitiveness Council (NCC).
City Mayor Oscar Moreno was invited by the NCC to speak in the 5th Regional Competitiveness Summit and Awards ceremony last August 16, in PICC Reception Hall, Pasay City to share the city's programs in terms of its technology innovations.
Launched only this year, the e-payment system allows residents and businesses pay their bills, such as business permit, real property tax, traffic citation, market stall rental, sales tax, transfer tax, and city building fees through the Globe-Cash Mobile Services and by dialing *137# on their phones.
The City Government is positive that with the new and improved payment system, it can surpass its total tax collections last year.
Last year, the Bureau of Internal Revenue collected P12.47 billion in 2016 as compared to its tax take of P10.75 billion in 2015, posting a growth rate of 15.96 percent or an increase of P1.72 billion.
Cagayan de Oro is the top collection revenue district of the BIR, among all other cities in Northern Mindanao.
