New generation currency coins highlight Philippine floras

VARIOUS Philippine endemic floras are featured in the Philippine New Generation Currency (NGC) Coin Series of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

Endemic flowers such as kapa-kapa, tayabak, waling-waling, katmon, kapal-kapal baging and mangkono mirror the different characteristics of Filipinos’ resiliency amidst pressures.

Aside from these flowers, the NGC Coin Series also underscores the new BSP logo along with the three national heroes - Apolinario Mabini in the P10, Andres Bonifacio in the P5 and Jose Rizal in the P1 -- and a stylized three stars and a sun in the centavo coins.

BSP–Bacolod Bank Officer II Dori Mae Valezuela said the NGC Coin Series complements the endemic fauna highlighted in the NGC Banknote Series.

“Why did we choose endemic flora? This is in order to align with the theme of our paper bills which featured the Philippine fauna,” Valenzuela said.

Valenzuela said the designs, features, and other specifications of the NGC coins have undergone extensive studies conducted by the BSP’s Numismatic Committee and Currency Management Committee.

The Monetary Board, meanwhile, reviewed the committees’ proposal and recommended for final approval of the Philippine president.

For its part, the BSP-Bacolod continues to conduct information drives to the public to educate them on the newly-issued NGC Coin Series. (PR)
