HCDC spikers rule Abreeza tournament

THE Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) men's and women's team swept the titles in the recently-concluded 4th Abreeza Kadayawan Volleyball Invitational Tournament that drew a total of 20 teams from different parts of Mindanao.

Calvin Sarte, who romped away with the most valuable player (MVP) award, powered the HCDC men's team to eke out a 26-24, 25-23, 30-32, 25-21, 15-13 upset victory over defending champion University of Mindanao (UM) Davao in their championship match.

UM Davao settled for the runner-up honors while Department of Agriculture and Fisheries-Armm and Cor Jesu College (CJC) Digos City placed third and fourth, respectively.

HCDC volleybelles collared the Philippine National Police (PNP) Lady Patrollers, 25-21, 25-23, 15-25, 21-25, 15-13, behind the heroics of Shiela Ochate who was named women's MVP.

Other special awardees were Kieth Sampinit of HCDC (best server), Nicole John Benico of HCDC (best setter), Andre Alderite HCDC (best blocker), Rex Paller UM Davao (best attacker) and Virgilio Saromines of UM Davao (best libero).

Georgie Loreto of HCDC (best server), Veronica Concenpcion of PNP (best setter), Theresa Montalban HCDC (best blocker), Lylle Amora of PNP (best attacker) and Helen Antiquando of PNP (best libero) were the other awardees in women's division.

Abreeza Ayala Mall general manager Luigi Escaño and Balibolista de Dabaw coordinator Abet Bernan awarded P20,000, P15,000, P10,000 and P5,000 to the top four teams in both divisions.
