Bornea aims for world ranking in IBF

UNBEATEN youngster Jade Bornea attempts to break into the world rankings this Saturday night as he defends his International Boxing Federation (IBF) Youth super flyweight belt against Thai Jakkrawut Majoogoen in the main event of Sanman Promotions’ “Road to Stardom” show at the Polomolok Gym.

“This is very important. If he wins this, he gets in the world rankings and will look for bigger fights,” Sanman Promotions CEO JC Manangquil told SunStar Cebu.

The 22-year-old Bornea won the vacant IBF Youth belt last February with a unanimous decision win over Raul Yu.

“Our target is the world champions of the 115-pound division. But we are not in a rush, we have time on our side,” said Manangquil.

The current IBF super flyweight champion is Pinoy Jerwin Ancajas.

“He said that he’s in the best shape of his life,” said Manangquil. “Yes, his opponent is also a top prospect from Thailand who also is in his best shape. Expect a non-stop action from both hungry boxers.”

The 22-year-old Majoogoen is coming off a knockout win over Sakchai Rachjinda in July. He has won five straight fights and his only career defeat is from World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight champion Daigo Higa.

Bornea is 8-0 with five knockouts, while Majoogoen (19-1, 11 KOs).

The co-main feature is an Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) Silver bantamweight crown between promising prospects Ben Mananquil and Jess Rhey Waminal.

IBF No. 3 rated light flyweight Randy Petalcorin (26-2-1, 19 KOs) keeps himself busy against journeyman Jetly Purisima (21-23-4, 6 KOs), while Eden Sonsona (36-7-2, 13 KOs) trades leathers with 39-year-old battle-scarred veteran Jaime Barcelona (39-61-1, 10 KOs). (EKA)
