Limpag: Resign Peping, resign all

VOLLEYBALL and karatedo are two of the most politicized NSAs in Philippine sports and they have one president in Joey Romasanta, who is also the vice president in the POC.

I don’t know Joey from Adam but his holding two presidential positions in two NSAs make you wonder, “isn’t there anyone else qualified to lead the post?” Romasanta’s position in volleyball, at least for me, is the more controversial one. There was an existing NSA--the Philippine Volleyball Federation-but Peping Cojuangco somehow managed to maneuver the PVF out of Olympic recognition and had it replaced by the LVPI, which Romasanta was appointed to head.

It is common sense that because Romasanta heads two NSAs, he can’t focus 100 percent on one. Why the other officers of these two NSAs allowed their president to occupy two positions perhaps also explains the sad state of their sports in the country.

Make no mistake, volleyball is a booming sport but you have to ask yourself this, apart from the Manila-based leagues, what else is in store for volleyball in the Philippines? Does it have a national championships? Does it have a grassroots program? Does it even have a presence outside of Manila?

As for karatedo, would you be surprised to know that it is wrecked with factionalism if the president is known to have started another faction in another sport?

Again, I don’t know Romasanta from Adam, but the very fact that he heads two NSAs show guys like him has no place in Philippine sports. Delicadeza dictates that he should have quit the karate post when he was named the volleyball head, or he should have declined the volleyball post because he was head of the karate NSA.

Joey Romasanta, too, is the reason why not only do I support the Resign Peping movement, I want to go a step further and demand that all POC officials resign. Philippine sports need a fresh perspective, one that was made obvious by the disaster that was the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.

Peping and his camp have headed the POC for the past 13 years and with the way their old boys club is going, Peping’s anointed one will head the POC once he decides to quit. Why? Has the POC become an heirloom to be handed to a favored one? Or is it because they don’t want fresh eyes who’d pore over what Peping and his favored ones have done in the POC in the past 13 years, specially on the financial aspect.

Sports officials love to cite the sacrifices athletes make for the country. Well, let’s all ask them to make that ultimate sacrifice for the country.

Resign.

All of them.
