Coming soon: Free wifi in Cordillera region

MOST municipalities in Cordillera may soon enjoy free wifi, made possible through the Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) TV White Space Program.

DOST-Cordillera Regional Director Julius Sicat recently told media the program is expected to be launched this year.

"Hopefully before the end of the year, may wifi connectivity na sa 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class municipalities in the Cordillera," Sicat said.

The TV White Space Program is a P3-billion initiative to provide internet connection to remote areas in the Philippines.

TV White Spaces (TVWS) are vacant frequencies located between TV channels which can be tapped for wireless internet connectivity.

Sicat said there will be no problem in areas without internet signals yet because the TVWS uses the same bandwidth as that of television.

It is ideal for wireless data delivery because of its long-distance distribution features and its ability to send signals over water.

It has the capability of delivering data by as much as 6 megabits (mbps) per second within a maximum range of 10 kilometers.

Sicat hopes that with access to the internet, Cordillerans in remote villages can hook up to the social media and the government's internet-based projects and programs. (Giovani Joy Fontanilla)
