Woman blames hospital for son’s death during birth

THE Tuburan District Hospital (TDH) is once again in trouble after a woman blamed its personnel for the death of her baby.

On her Facebook page, Christyl Gabayan, a 21-year-old woman from the midwestern town, said that she was admitted to the hospital last Aug. 26 when she underwent labor.

Dr. Rene Catan, Provincial Heath Office head, told SunStar Cebu that Gabayan was referred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) by a certain “Dr. Mercado” when she still didn’t give birth after five hours.

It was only later that hospital officials find out that Gabayan’s baby had died at the VSMMC.

Based on pictures posted by Gabayan on Facebook, there were lacerations on the baby’s body.

But Catan said he has yet to determine where the lacerations came from.

On her post, Gabayan said she plans to seek justice.

Og sa mga inahan nga nakakita ani, saksihi ninyo ang nahitabo sa akong anak! Sa kabanay, kaliwat ug kaparentihan, mao ni nahitabo sa akong anak. Sa tanang kababayen-an sa Tuburan, ug manganakay sigurado lang gyud mo daan sa inyong kasiguroan sa kinabuhi ilabi na sa inyong mga anak (To all the mothers out there, look at what they’ve done to my son! To my relatives, this is what happened to my son...I need justice for my baby),” she said in Cebuano.

Catan assured that he will investigate the incident.

He said he has instructed Dr. Esteban Ligaray, TDH chief of hospital, to submit a report on the incident on Monday.

SunStar Cebu tried to get Ligaray’s comment on the issue but all calls to his cellular phone remained unanswered as of press time.

Back in 2015, the TDH was embroiled in controversy after a public school teacher who was admitted there died after she was administered with an expired drug.

The doctor who administered the drug was eventually sacked by the PHO.
