ADDITIONAL supply of pork in some cities and municipalities in Negros Occidental has pulled down the average price of the commodity, an official of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) said.
Joselito Jaballa, officer-in-charge of Livestock Services Division of PVO, said Monday, September 11, pork supply in the Second District, particularly in cities of Sagay and Cadiz, increased over its requirement, resulting to a drop in prices.
From P200 per kilogram last week, a kilogram of pork now costs P195. This resulted to the decrease of P1.19 on the average price of the product in the province, Jaballa said.
As of the September 11 Prevailing Market Price Monitoring of the PVO, the average price of pork is P197.19 per kilogram lower than the previous price of P198.38 per kilogram.
“We have more swine raisers in Second District thus, the movement in the supply and demand in this area affects the average price of the commodity in the whole province,” he added.
The PVO also noted a decrease on the price of chevon, or goat meat.
From P284.33 per kilogram during the September 4 monitoring, it went down to P279.44, with a decrease of P4.89 per kilogram.
It is mainly attributed to the decrease in consumption of the commodity which is always “changing,” Jaballa said, adding that negligible decreases in the prices of native chicken and small table eggs were also noted.
Reports showed that from P216.67 per kilogram, native chicken’s price dropped by P0.84 while small eggs cost P5.71 per piece, with a decrease of P0.03.
Prices of other livestock and poultry products have remained high.
Broiler chicken posted an increase of P0.17 per kilogram. From P157.19, it went up to P157.36. Other sizes of eggs posted an average increase of about P0.03 per piece.
The PVO noted an increase of P1.86 per kilogram in the price of beef. From P232.71, it went up to P234.57.
The price of carabeef rose to P230.56 from only P229.56 per kilogram, with an increase of P1.
Jaballa pointed out that since the consumption of chicken has not yet fully normalized due to the recent bird flu outbreak, some consumers opted to buy beef instead thus, consumption and price of the latter also increased.
“The recent changes in prices of local livestock and poultry products were mainly affected by intra-provincial movement. Meaning, the increase or decrease in one area affects the entire province,” he added.
