Gunman kills village official in Basilan

A VILLAGE official was killed in a gun attack in an island village of Basilan province, the police reported on Tuesday, September 12.

Superintendent Jerome Afuyog, Isabela City police chief, identified the victim as village Councilor Alasin Sali Kaya of Tampalan, Malamawi Island, Isabela City, Basilan.

Afuyog said Kaya was allegedly shot by Ben Apas around 8:20 a.m., Monday, September 11, in the village of Tampalan.

He said that Kaya, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was rushed to a hospital in mainland Isabela City for medication.

But he said Kaya died later Monday while being transported to a hospital in Zamboanga City.

He said the motive of the incident has yet to be ascertained although initially, it is believed to involve money.

He said Kaya, who is a resident of Sibago Island, Mohammad Ajul, Basilan has gone into hiding. (SunStar Philippines)
