Sungduan: Miguel

AN AWARD-WINNING student produced local film that will teach everyone a message on many social issues in the society and touch their hearts in silence will now be shown in a big screen in Baguio City.

New Media Services Film Festival 2017’s big winner “Miguel” a movie which talks about a deaf boy and his struggles in the world full of discriminations and injustices will be shown on Monday, September 25 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at SM City Baguio cinema.

Young filmmaker Paul Brian Baldoza, the director, cinematographer, and scriptwriter of the well appreciated film said “Miguel” is simple but very meaningful in terms of content as it clearly pictures relevant social issues such as bullying, depression, mental health, concerns of the deaf community, and also the importance of family support.

Some of the scenes in the film were actually based on real-life experiences especially about going through depression because of bullying and suicidal attempt. But a mother is always there begging, hoping, and praying to save his son.

University of the Cordilleras Communication student Baldoza said Miguel’s deafness is symbolic because a person who is depressed is also deaf to his world. Nobody would like to listen to him and no one can hear him. However, at the end of the day, it’s always the unconditional love that listens-the love of a mother and the family.

“Di man marinig ng tenga, pero nararamdaman ng puso,” he added.

Low budget but quality film “Miguel” won the overall best film, best actor, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best editing, and best picture people’s choice award in the New Media Services Film Festival Award held on June 3 at Casa Vallejo Hill Station. The film screening was held at CAP Theater at Camp John Hay.

The one hour film is also an entry to the 4th edition of Urduja Festival (Northern Luzon Film Festival.

With the observance of National Suicide Prevention Week from September 10-15 and World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, the screening of “Miguel” is a timely activity that will enlighten the people on the need to take a serious action to prevent suicides.

May this film inspire more students in pursuing their interest in the art and in producing motion pictures that will open the hearts and minds of the people on the different social issues happening in the country today.
