FIRST, the Bank of the Philippine Islands had a tournament called The BPI Golf Cup, and it was held at Rancho Palos Verdes on August 31, 2017.
Congratulations to the winners. Here they are: overall gross champion Paul Dakudao, net champion Modesto “Ting” Castillo (CB); class A net champion Eugene Chiong, runner-up Mark Oropeza; class B net champion Albert Bacus (CB), runner-up Jeffrey Ramirez; class C net champion Hermie Arzagon (CB), runner-up Paul Montejo.
Non-golfers are wondering — what is “CB?” CB means “countback.” Winner by countback.
Winner by countback? Let us say at the end of the day, after finishing a round of golf, two players end up with the same score at the top. Who will be declared champion?
There are 18 holes, right? To break the tie, between the two, the player with the better score on the last hole wins. If they have the same score on the 18th hole, then the player with the better score on the 17th hole wins…and so on, 16th, 15th, until they come up with a winner.
Sometimes, instead of hole per hole, to break the tie, the organizing committee prefers--better score for the last 3 holes, or better score for the back nine. Okay? Learned something new today, huh? To break the tie, if the rule is count back, or if you read “winner by count back,” that’s what it means.
To the ones who won via count back, congratulations again. To the ones who lost by count back, ouch, better luck next time.
I have experience losing via count back quite a few times. No fun at all. Masakit! Haha! I would rather lose by a big margin — (lose by 10 points, for example) rather than lose by count back. Trust me. No good. You go home trying to recall your silly mistakes—those short putts you missed or blasting from the sand trap twice. One less stroke could have made a big, big difference.
And the ones who lost by 10 strokes, masarap ang tulog sa gabi. Haha!
Speaking of banks, there is a Bank of Nova Scotia. Wiki said that the Bank of Nova Scotia (French: Banque de la Nouvelle-Écosse), operating as Scotiabank (French: Banque Scotia), is a Canadian multinational bank.
HSBC, a real bank. And BPI, if someone says BPI, or Bank of PI or Bank of the Philippine Islands, same bank. So Bank of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Bank, Scotiabank, we know which bank it is now.
Change Topic. The golfing ladies of Davao are getting ready for the 12th PAL Ladies Interclub Golf Tournament. The tournament is going to be held at Cebu Country Club from September 19-22, 2017. Practice round and Team Captain’s Meeting will be on September 18, 2017.
This year, there will be two teams from Davao that are participating—Apo Golf Club and Rancho Palos Verdes Golf Club. Here are the players:
Rancho Palos Verdes Team - Jean Gotianse (team captain), Gemma Bokawachi, Maricel Kim, Cristine Powell, Park Ok Hee (Clara Kim), Park Myung Seon (Sunny), and Lee Kuem Rea; Apo Golf Club Team - Keseree Ng (team captain), Rutchie Albers, Evelyn Quinsay, Jover Vergara, Tsuky Ortega, Danica Nagayo, Tina Bandolon, and Jing Sara.
Last year, the tournament was held in Baguio. This year, Maayong Buntag Cebu!
Unfortunately, I will not be joining this year. Schedule conflict. I love PAL tournaments, but this time I have to let this one go. But I will still be taking a PAL flight though. Just not for a golf vacation/competition.
Mimi Siason, the designated team captain of Apo Golf, is a no-show also this year. Schedule conflict too.
