Mongaya: CHR controversy

PRO-ADMINISTRATION propaganda is so effective that over 119 congressmen believe the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) should go after criminals and rebels.

In going after abusive policemen, the CHR has been tagged as politically biased and thus deserves a budget of only P1,000 next year. In effect, these congressmen are giving police scalawags the freedom to abuse human rights with impunity.

Now, there is this talk that the budget will be restored if CHR’s Chito Gascon will resign.

The way I see it, the House majority led by Speaker Bebot Alvarez are the ones playing politics. They are using the budget as a political weapon against Gascon. They have the gall to play with a body created by our Constitution. They could not wait to play assholes during the coming con-ass?

The P1,000 budget issue, nevertheless, showed us who among our congressmen are thinking right. I’m glad three of them are Cebuanos – Reps. Raul del Mar of Cebu City North, Aileen Radaza of Lapu-Lapu City, and Willy Caminero of the second district.

I’m also pinning my hopes on majority of our senators to set things right – Manny Pacquiao, Ping Lacson, Sherwin Gachalian, Loren Legarda, Migz Zubiri, Sonny Angara, Chiz Escudero, Risa Hontiveros, Kiko Pangilinan, Franklin Drilon, Sonny Trillanes, Ralph Recto, Grace Poe, Bam Aquino, and Joel Villanueva.

Reading the sentiments of netizens, this issue has gained traction as Sept. 21 nears.

This issue should also make the discussions during next week’s Cebu celebration of Press Freedom Week interesting.

On a lighter note, however, I said during a meeting of anti-Marcos activists that the Cebu protests on September 21 should be in the morning up to a little after lunch to make the job of local print journalists easier. Editors need to close the next day’s paper early so they can make it to the Globe Media Excellence Awards (GMEA) Recognition Night.

Mike Rama is the strongest personality who can provide leadership to Team Rama. He should replace Councilor Hanz Abella. That’s if PAV Mike Dino will help Rama. But will he?

Other names floated weeks ago like Junjun Osmeña faded to the background. Some barangay captains reportedly pushed for Rama.

Besides, being the UNA Central Visayas coordinator during the 2016 campaign, Rama has the clout to get the support of UNA chairman Jojo Binay.

But will President Rodrigo Roa Duterte name Rama as Cebu City Councilor having named the former mayor as a drug lord protector twice?

Maybe Presidential Assistant for Visayas Mike Dino can convince the president regarding Rama this time around. After all, it was Dino who engineered the appointment of Hanz as NLRC commissioner.

But won’t Dino work instead for his bayaw Junjun Osmeña? Won’t Rama be an obstacle later to Dino’s mayoral plans, if ever?

What’s this I’m hearing about opposition financiers getting fed up with the current potential candidates for mayor? Naa man daw nangulitawo kang Tingting de la Serna.
