Oplan Broadcastreeing kicks off in Eastern Visayas

OVER a thousand volunteers are expected to join the Oplan Broadcastreeing, a tree planting project, in Barangay 100, San Roque, Tacloban City, today, September 16.

The project, which is now on its sixth year, is led by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), said DILG-Eastern Visayas Director Marivel C. Sacendoncillo.

“Let us urge everyone to likewise care for tree growing aside from tree planting,” he said.

Sacendoncillo said the project, held annually, aims to plant about 2,200 fruit trees in a 3.5-hectare hilly area identified by DENR as planting site under the expanded National Greening Program.

Aside from the KBP, DILG and DENR, some organizations have signified their intent to join. These include the Philippine Army 8th Infantry Division, 546th Engineering Battalion, Philippine National Police (PNP) regional office, Eastern Visayas State University (Evsu), Tacloban vicariate, City Government of Tacloban, Liga ng mga Barangay of Tacloban, Philippine Red Cross, Radnet, Delta Volunteers, PCCI Tacloban-Leyte Inc., Tacloban Filipino Chinese Volunteer Fire Brigade, Tacloban Rescue Unit (Tacru), Nagkaorosa San Roque Farmers Association (Nagsarfa), Tacloban PNP, Knights of Columbus-Leyte East, Learning Institute for Environment (Life) of Evsu, Perpetual Help Credit Cooperative Incorporated, Philippine Public Safety College, Department of Agriculture, City Central School in Tacloban City, Department of Social Welfare and Developmemt regional office, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Leyte 1st District Congressional Office, 804th Ready Reserve Infantry Battalion (reservists and ROTC cadets from Leyte Colleges), council of Barangay 100 in San Roque, and San Roque Elementary School.

Sacendoncillo acknowledged Friday the agencies, groups and individuals who have contributed to help make the activity a success.

For the seedlings, the DENR has donated 2,000 seeds, while the Department of Agriculture gave 250 seedlings.

The people's organization Nagsarfa assisted in site preparation.

This Saturday, September 16, assembly area is at Plaza Rizal, corner Real-Justice Romualdez streets, Tacloban City, at 4 a.m.

The convoy will go to the project site at 5 a.m. The program will start at 5:45 a.m., while the tree planting is expected to last until 7 a.m
